What to Wear at the Edge of the World

When I visited the Edge of the World, I quickly realized how important it was to wear the right gear. The cliffs are rocky and steep, so I made sure to wear comfortable sneakers with good grip. I saw a few tourists in flip-flops, and they really struggled with the descent, so sturdy footwear is essential.

The heat during my trip (in September) was intense, with temperatures reaching around 50°C. I made sure to stay hydrated and brought plenty of water with me. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat were necessary to protect myself from the sun. If you’re visiting in winter, be prepared for the evening chill; temperatures drop significantly, so I’d recommend packing warm clothing from November to March.

How to Dress

For men, I noticed that most were wearing loose-fitting clothes suitable for hiking, paired with comfortable shoes. The Saudi dress code isn’t too strict for men, and casual, practical clothing works well for the hike. I wore a light shirt and pants for comfort, which was perfect for the heat and the terrain.

As for women, most of them wore loose-fitting clothing for comfort, with some opting for a hijab or hat for sun protection. While the abaya is no longer mandatory (since 2019), some women, like myself, still wore it for its comfort and sun protection, especially since it allows you to wear a T-shirt underneath. I also saw a few foreigners wearing leggings, which worked just fine for the hike.

My Personal Experience at the Edge of the World

Visiting the Edge of the World was an unforgettable experience. The drive through the desert to reach the cliffs was an adventure in itself. When I finally arrived, the view from the top took my breath away. The vast desert stretched out for miles, with the cliffs towering over the valley below.

The cooler months, from October to April, are the best time to visit, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). It’s much more comfortable for hiking, as the summer heat can be extreme, reaching up to 50°C.

Make sure to bring plenty of water, as the area is remote and there are no services around. Also, pack a power bank to charge your devices, because the mobile network can be unreliable. And of course, don’t forget your camera, the views are so stunning that you’ll want to capture every moment.

Hiking up the rocks was a bit challenging but totally worth it for the view. I was glad I wore comfortable shoes, as the terrain was rocky and uneven. Overall, it was a perfect day of adventure, nature, and breathtaking views.
